Walking into a fertility clinic for the first time is a decision that took courage — and usually longer to make than it should have. You’re here now, and the first appointment is simpler and less invasive than you’re imagining. Here’s exactly what happens, what to bring, and how to leave with the clarity you came for.

- Both partners’ medical history: previous pregnancies, miscarriages, surgeries, chronic conditions, medications.
- Any existing test results: semen analysis, hormonal panels, ultrasound reports, HSG results, thyroid tests. Even if they’re from another doctor — they save time and money.
- Menstrual history: cycle length, regularity, any changes. A period-tracking app’s last 6 months is genuinely helpful.
- Duration of trying: how long, and whether intercourse timing was tracked.
Come Together If Possible
Fertility is a couple’s investigation. The doctor needs to see both partners’ histories, and the conversation — especially about testing plans and treatment options — is better had jointly. If the male partner truly can’t attend, the minimum is a recent semen analysis report sent along.
Write Down Your Questions
You’ll forget them once you’re in the chair. Bring a written list — even just on your phone. Good starting questions:

What Happens During the Appointment
History taking (15–20 minutes): the doctor asks about your cycles, sexual health, medical history, lifestyle, and previous investigations. Answer honestly — the questions about frequency of intercourse, previous STIs, or alcohol use aren’t judgmental; they’re diagnostic.
Physical examination (optional at first visit): a transvaginal ultrasound may be performed to assess the ovaries (antral follicle count, any cysts or fibroids) and uterine lining. It takes 5 minutes and feels similar to a pap smear. Some clinics do this at the first visit; others schedule it separately around day 2–5 of your cycle for optimal timing. A male partner’s physical examination (checking for varicocele) may be offered by a urologist or the same specialist.
Test plan (the key output): the doctor orders or recommends tests based on what’s already been done and what’s missing. The standard panel: AMH blood test, antral follicle count (often done during the scan), tubal patency test (HSG), hormonal panel (day 2–3 FSH, LH, oestradiol, thyroid, prolactin), and semen analysis for the male partner.
